Checking that a catalog is available
Confirm in the Console that a catalog can be found and used by the users you expect.
When to use this
- Use it when users cannot find a data source.
- Use it after adding or changing a catalog visible in the product.
- Use it before granting data rules over a new catalog.
Before you start
- Have the catalog's name.
- Know which group or user should be able to find it.
- Have an administration or data management role.
Step by step
- Open Data Catalog.
- Search for the catalog by name.
- Check that the expected schemas and tables appear.
- Open a table and review its main columns.
- Test with an expected user or group where needed.
- If the catalog does not appear, contact whoever administers the environment.
What happens next
- You will know whether the problem is the catalog's availability or an access rule.
- Managers can create data rules with more confidence.
- Users get more precise guidance.
Common errors
- Granting a rule before confirming the catalog appears.
- Validating with a user who does not represent the affected group.
- Confusing an available catalog with permission to query all its data.
Good practice
- Validate discovery and querying separately.
- Use consistent catalog names in requests.
- Document who is responsible for the catalog.
